Higher is not automatically better. A 4K file on a phone screen wastes storage and shows you nothing extra. Here is how to pick the resolution that actually matches where you will watch it.
What the Numbers Mean
The figure refers to the number of horizontal lines of pixels stacked from top to bottom. The 'p' stands for progressive scan, meaning every line is drawn in each frame. More lines means more detail — and roughly proportionally more data.
- 480p — 854 × 480 pixels. Standard definition. Fine on a phone, soft on anything larger.
- 720p — 1280 × 720 pixels. HD. The practical floor for a laptop screen.
- 1080p — 1920 × 1080 pixels. Full HD. Still the most common resolution on the web.
- 1440p — 2560 × 1440 pixels. Quad HD. Common on gaming monitors.
- 2160p — 3840 × 2160 pixels. Usually marketed as 4K. Four times the pixels of 1080p.
Your Screen Sets the Ceiling
A display cannot show detail it does not have pixels for. Downloading 4K to watch on a 1080p monitor means the file is scaled back down during playback — you paid four times the storage for an image your screen physically cannot resolve. Check your device's actual display resolution before assuming bigger is better. Most phones, despite excellent screens, are showing you far less than 4K in a video player window.
File Size Grows Faster Than You Expect
Doubling the resolution roughly quadruples the pixel count, and file size follows. Exact sizes depend on the codec, bitrate and how much motion is in the footage, but as a rough guide for ten minutes of typical video: 480p lands around 50–80 MB, 720p around 120–200 MB, 1080p around 250–400 MB, and 4K can easily exceed 1.5 GB. On a metered mobile connection that difference is the whole decision.
Resolution Is Not the Same as Quality
Two 1080p files can look dramatically different. Bitrate — how much data is spent per second — often matters more than resolution. A heavily compressed 1080p clip with visible blocking in dark scenes will look worse than a generously encoded 720p one. Codec matters too: AV1 and VP9 deliver noticeably better image quality than older H.264 at the same file size, which is why modern platforms have been migrating to them.
A Practical Recommendation
If you want a rule of thumb rather than a spreadsheet:
- Watching on a phone, or short on storage: 480p is genuinely enough — and on YouTube specifically, 360p is the one resolution that arrives with audio already muxed in.
- Watching on a laptop or tablet: 720p or 1080p is the sweet spot.
- Watching on a large TV, or planning to crop and zoom in an edit: 1080p minimum, 4K if the source truly is 4K.
- Archiving something irreplaceable: take the highest resolution offered — storage gets cheaper, the original may not stay online.
One Thing to Remember About YouTube
On YouTube specifically, anything above 360p arrives as a video-only stream because the platform stores picture and sound separately at every higher resolution. That is worth factoring into your choice: if you need a single ready-to-play file with no extra steps, 360p is the only resolution that gives it to you directly. For anything sharper you will be downloading the audio separately and combining the two.
